Provenance: Belgian private collection.
This painting is a workshop copy of a self portrait dating from around 1640, which was still in 1982 in the collection of Dr. Hans Pau, Kiel, (see R. A. d’Hulst, Jacob Jordaens, Stuttgart 1982, p. 286, ill. 246). D’Hulst says of the Kiel picture, “The earliest self portrait of Jordaens must have been produced around 1640. It shows him half-length with a print in his hand, his head turned towards the viewer. His penetrating gaze betrays how intensively he studied his appearance in the mirror and how he examined himself...”.
